In this post, I am going to give you some tips on how to cut your rabbits toenails so they don't become overgrown.

First of all, you want to make them used to their feet being touched. To do this, when you are giving them a carrot or some other food which they can have, you want to go next to them and carefully pick up their paws and hold them up gently so they become used to you doing so and aren't as afraid when you actually go to clip them.

After this, you will want to make sure you know where you should and shouldn't cut their nails. The part in which you don't want to cut is called the quick. This is the pinky looking part. The reason you don't want to cut this is because it will bleed if you do and there is a vein there, along with nerve endings, which makes it hurt your bunny.

Next, there is a few ways you can actually do this. You can just cut your rabbits nails on your own like in this video below:

By lying them on their back, it can be very useful as it tends to relax them, yet this is difficult to do with some bunnies. I would try this method in the video first of all.

Another way you can cut your rabbits nails is by having two people. One person will be holding them and the other will have the clippers and will hold each of their paws and clip them. Either way works well it just depends which one is easier for you.

If you don't feel comfortable clipping them yourself, at your local vets they should be able to do it for you.

I hope this short post on how to cut your rabbits nails was useful for you, making your bunny have nicely cut nails!

This could be due to the teeth not aligning properly.

This generally happens in middle-aged and older bunnies. Yet the younger bunnies are more likely to suffer something called congenital malocclusion.

The breeds who are at higher risk to suffer from congenital misalignment are dwarf and lops.

Symptoms:

Unable to chew food

Anorexia

A preference for their water bowl to their sipper bottle

Excessive drooling

Nasal discharge

Excessive tear production

Pain

Tooth grinding

Causes:

This tends to mainly be from ageing bunnies, due to the fact their teeth are always growing and they are living longer than the bunnies in the wild. This can occur from lack of fibrous, tough foods, as these allow them to properly grind their food.

Treatment:

How it is treated, depends on how severe it is. An option is to have something called coronal reduction and in this they have their teeth trimmed down.

Sometimes, extraction is necessary. They may be prescribed some different medications in which you will need to give to them. Make sure you go to the vets though to have them checked up to see what should be done.

This is the most common form in which rabbits get cancer. It occurs in above 60% of bunnies over the age of 3.

This usually forms after a bunny has already developed some other reproductive issue in them. This could be endometriosis.

Symptoms:

The symptoms can vary between the bunnies.

Blood in their urine

Vaginal discharge stained with blood

Cysts in the mammary glands

Cloudy fluid which may come from the mammary glands

Behavioural changes

Lethargy

Inability to eat

Pale mucus membranes

Abdominal masses

Mammary glands

Causes:

If your bunny is still capable or reproducing (hasn't been spayed) then they are at risk.

Treatment:

This could involve a hysterectomy to remove the whole of your bunnies uterus. This is what they would consider to do first if it hasn't spread beyond their reproductive organs. They may preform a biopsy to see how much it has spread.

Positive factors:

They are good for people who want a small friendly pet.

They are quiet and ideal for condo's or apartments (make sure you are fully committed to looking after them though.

On average they live 4-7 years yet it will depend on how well you care for them as some can live for up to 18 years.

They don't bark, the only noise they make is a high pitched squeal when they are frightened or hurt.

They usually don't mind being petted or groomed.

They will take food out of your hand, especially as you bond and become closer to them.

They can be a full indoor pet as long as their cage is large enough.

You can take them outdoors and but them a leash to do so.

They each have their own personality.

They sleep with their eyes open sometimes.

They are strong creatures.

You can train them.

Negative factors:

They may hurt themselves chewing a wire or your furniture if thy are indoors, due to the fact they like to nibble things.

They enjoy to dig.

Like all pets they may bite you.

They need to keep their claws clipped.

They need to be brushed regularly.

They can hurt you if they are on your lap and jump off and kick you.

They can sometimes have aggressive behaviour.

Personally, I find rabbits are good pets and would recommend you to have one if you are able to and have the space too keep them. Make sure you but them a good sized hutch and to keep them with lots of toys to play with.

I hope you now understand why rabbits are good pets.

This is because as you may not already know, they are actually very intelligent, so you need to make sure that they have lots of things they can do, even when you aren't there. You may need to purchase some toys to 'work their brains' or even something fun for them.

This species requires more attention then you may have not known. You have to make sure that you rotate around their toys as well so they aren't sitting with the same toys all day.

They absolutely love to chew, so you have to make sure that they aren't left near anything they can wreck.

Here are some simple ways you can keep your bunny out of trouble:

Flip and Toss:

They love to throw things around, some even enjoy to attack things. You can purchase some small toys in which may have a bell in them and are small little balls, or something which they can chew as well.

Chewing:

As they love to chew, make sure they have something available in which you don't mind them chewing as their teeth are surprisingly really strong. This is also good as they need to keep their teeth worn down as their teeth are constantly growing.

Remodelling:

To give your bunny something to 'remodel' you can use cardboard boxes. All you need to do is cut holes out of each of them and stick them together and allow them to chew it and run through it all they want. This is said to save your furniture.

Obstacles:

You can use various objects and encourage them to jump over them and to go through them. Anything which makes them have to do something different, other than hopping around.

Below, I will list some ways and useful tips in which I would recommend you to use.

Their fur can make them look absolutely adorable, yet it will require daily grooming in order to keep it all looking nice.

Your bunny will normally shed a few times a year, although some do shed all year round.

If your bunnies fur becomes matted in places, over time it can become a large problem. They will become large clumps of fur which in some cases can make their movement be restricted.

If they are groomed properly, it can take up to around half an hour each day. Personally, when choosing a bunny, I would choose a short haired one, such as the one I currently own.

You may want to invest in a pair of clippers so you can keep their fur nicely trimmed down and looking very well kept. They are a safe way of removing clumps out of your bunnies fur.

If your having trouble with clippers, you could try a pair of electric ones. These are said to work quite well.

You may want to use a comb in your rabbits fur as well. You can even use a human one as they will pick up any small matts to save you some trouble later on. Just make sure not to pull their fur too hard as it will cause them pain.

If they are completely covered in a ball of fur, like one giant tangle (which can occur within weeks) then I would recommend you going tot the vets to have this sorted out so it doesn't become a larger issue. Keep in mind, you may not want to go to the vets regularly due to it being fairly expensive to have this done, so you are going to have to stay on top of it your self.

I hope this post helped you to gain a better understanding about grooming a long haired rabbit.

They are different to dogs, as you do need to bath your dog regularly.

To sum it up, I would say NO they don't. Here are some reasons why:

They only need bath if they are in a really bad condition in which for some reason they need to be cleaned up, yet this has to be done a certain way so make sure someone who knows what they ar e doing, is doing it.

They are absolutely terrified of water and I am not surprised by this as when they are in the wild, if in their burrow it gets flooded with water, it means they are going to die. This is an instinctual feature in which they have.

When you try to bath them, they will automatically panik, which makes it very difficult to actually wash them.

Short haired bunnies tend to be okay (this is breeds such as dutch) although long haired bunnies (such as lion head) can end up with parts of their fur matted and tangled, even sometimes sticky.

If this was to happen, then you should first of all try to do what is called a 'dry bath'. This is were you take baby cornstarch and put it onto the parts of your bunnies fur which needs cleaning. You then massage it into these areas which should help all of the dirt to them slide off of the fur and be removed from your bunnies.

Also, in pet shops, you can now purchase wipes in which you can do the same with. I have never used these before, yet they look like they would be good for long haired bunnies.

If you do need to bath them for some reason, you may want to consider asking a vet for assistance, as they will know how to do this.

It is a good idea to avoid giving your rabbit a bath as they will absolutely hate it.
In this post, I am going to tell you all about it.

With some cases your bunny may just like to nibble and bite things. This isn't always the case though. Another reason is that your bunny may be slightly aggressive, yet the reason they may be like that is because your breaking their 'bunny rules'.

When rabbits bite you, it's like them telling you off in their way as you have done something wrong. Amongst themselves, they have a strick code in which they follow, but they won't have a sign which they have made saying 'don't do this or I will bite you'. This is just general bunny behaviour of in which ways they treat each other.

This is like giving you a warning, telling you not to do it again. Sometimes they will be protective of their cages as it is where they live, so when you try to clean it out or rearrange it, they may give you a 'telling off'.

They may think of themselves as the boss and when they want grooming , you have to groom them. If you have your hand near them, or they come up to you and start nudging or nuzzling your hand, this is a sign of them wanting to be groomed.

In your bunny's mind, if you don't understand their 'code' then you are far too stupid (which you aren't). Rabbits bite you to try to 'teach you a lesson' and to make sure you understand that you did something wrong.

They think of us as very large, furless bunnies who are badly behaved and need to be punished.

They think differently of how things work and what you should do, unlike a dog they don't see you as an 'owner' or 'master'.

From this post you may think of rabbits as very strange, yet they are actually highly intelligent which is why it's good to bond with your bunny and to play with them all the time.

I hope this post about why rabbits bite has given you a better understanding about them.
Also how well they have been developing and the owners desire's and past experiences.

The age is normally in between 6-8 weeks. Yet it used to be 8-10 weeks.

The process in which I have heard is effective:

The doe and litter should be separated at one time. Yet keep the whole litter together.

The weaned rabbits should be kept together for about 2-3 weeks after weaning from their mother as the stress on weaned kits is reduced if they are kept with each other.

If you remove them all at once, it reduces the risk of mastitis in the doe.

As you remove them all at once, then the doe's milk will dry up faster as if they keep some with her, then the milk keeps stimulating.

Due to the stress of weaning and the fact the young rabbits consume a lot of solid food, they are more likely to have diarrhoea and enteritis.

Some breeders use different techniques to avoid this. For example some add an electrolyte to their water supply as this helps them to become rehydrated.

If you are requiring more advice on this topic, I would recommend you to visit your local veterinary practice as they will have some useful tips which can help you as well as they may have something they can use to help.

I hope this post about weaning process for rabbits was useful for you.

This can be hind limb paresis and that can be caused by:

Trauma to the spine, pelvis or limbs

spondylosis or osteoarthritis

damaged or ruptured vertebrae discs

bacterial infection

the roundworm parasite

Symptoms:

signs or wobbliness or weakness in their hind legs

has occasional trouble staying upright

during normal activities sometimes falls over

If your rabbit does have paralysis, then you will wan to visit the vets to find out of any treatment which they can have. If they completely can't use their back legs you may want to consider either buying them some rabbit wheels or if it may be time to put them down.

This is a very stressful topic as people can become very attached to their pets as they are companions for them, yet you have to consider what the best way is for them.

Sometimes this can be cause by a broken back leg from the way you may have handled them, or if a predator had attacked them. If thats the case, then you will have to see in ways of having their leg protected by having it checked at the vets.

This can be caused by trauma (being physically injured) or by pathogens (which is similar to a virus).

I hope this post helped you to understand paralysis in rabbits better.
This is a disease of birds and mammals.

This is caused by the protozoal parasite. From what I have learned there has been 25 species of coccidia observed in the gastrointestinal tract of the rabbit. These are rarely a danger to humans which means you can handle them without ending up with it as we are mammals.

Healthy bunnies can be carriers of this, yet from their faeces, they can contaminate their environment - including their food and water, and this especially effects the younger animals.

You should be giving your bunny dry pellets, washed fresh vegetables and clean drinking water. If your bunny is living in these conditions, it is said that the coccidiosis in rabbits is much less likely to occur.

Symptoms:

These can vary depending on if the disease is a hepatic or intestinal infection.

They may loose their appetite and loose weight.

They may have diarrhoea.

They may get a 'pot-bellied' appearance or pain in the abdomen.

They may become dehydrated and present signs of weakness.

Treatment:

If you have you doubts on weather or not your bunny has this or not, I would take them to the vets to have them checked to make sure. What has previously been used to treat this, has made the parasites more resistant to it, yet there is a stronger medication in which thy can use. Also if they have any secondary bacterial infections, they will also be treated but with anti biotics.

So after you take them to the vets, listen to the instructions in which they have given you to do with your bunny to help cure this vile disease. I have heard that it is recommended that they are kept separate from any others in which they may be living with.

I hope this post gave you a better understanding about coccidiosis in rabbits!
This is a bacterial infection of the skin. The part it effects is when your bunny is sitting, the part of their back feet which are touching the ground (called their hock's).

If you leave this untreated it can deteriorate to become a disease on the skin in which emits pus which is also known as pyoderma.

Cause

This is an inflammation of the balls of the feet and is usually caused by infection. This infection occurs when you pet ha broken skin on the bottom of their feet and bacteria gets into it. This is a wound or abrasion on the foot. The skin can become broken from the bottom of the cage floor if it is just wire mesh.

Their are different grades of this depending on how bad it is:

Grade I - This is a milder form of the disease and they could have fur loss, and some other early symptoms on their back feet

Grade II - At this stage they will have fur loss on their feet and possible have swelling and redness on the feet and hock's.

Grade III - At this stage they will experience broken skin, with possibly a scab which could potentially be an opportunity for an infection

Grade IV - By this stage the rabbit is highly likely to have an abscess, and inflammation of the tendons or deeper tissues within the hind limbs of their body

Grade V - The rabbit at this stage is likely to experience severe symptoms of the sore hocks in rabbits, including bone marrow infection, swelling of the joint tissue and possibly inflammation of the tendons which is known as tendonitis. From this they may walk abnormally or have an abnormal stance or posture.

Symptoms

This will usually first appear as a small, reddish bump/lump on the bottom of the foot. This may look similar to calluses on human feet. Their is a closed abscess inside the lump. When the lumps grow large, they may break open and bleed. This is when they could be infected.

Treatment/Prevention

There isn't a certain treatment for this so you may have to visit a vet to see what would be the best for your bunny. To help prevent bumblefoot in rabbits, you need to make sure that there is no trauma to feet which could be from walking on wire mesh, a clean hutch so they can't get an infection and solid surface floors.
Make sure NOT to overfeed you cute bunny as this can cause obesity if you do happen to overfeed them, I would give them 1-2 a day depending on the size in which you make them.

In this post I am going to give you a recipe which I made up myself and I think it actually sounds tasty in a way! Below I am going to give you a list of ingredients and a step by step method.

Ingredients:

2 cups of oats

1 small ripe banana (make sure it looks appealing to eat)

A few bits of parsley

Method:

Line a cookie tray with parchment paper (or an alternative to this)

set your oven to 180degrees (or gas mark 4)

Start by mashing your banana until it is creamy

Place it into a bowl and combine it with your oats

Add in your parsley

spread it evenly onto your baking tray slice it into small reasonably sized pieces

Put in your oven for approximately 10 minutes (or until it is golden-brown)

leave them to cool down for about another 10 minutes and you are ready to feed them your homemade rabbit treats! Enjoy!
They are defined as pus-filled capsules or pockets in their tooth, or mouth. They are very painful for them and these tend to grow within inflamed areas of their gums. This is where the infection is more likely to grow.

Types and Symptoms:

Here is a list of the common symptoms:

Oral cavity

Loose teeth

Abnormal teeth or bite alignment

Overgrown incisor teeth

Oral tissue Swelling

Having a preference of eating softer foods when they can

Loss of weight (can be very extreme)

Obstruction on tear or nasal ducts

Respiratory irritation

Any signs which they are in pain or discomfort

Lethargy

depression, or hiding haunched posture

Causes:

There are many different reasons for why this can happen. It can happen when there is tooth or dental decay. They aren't like those which form in the mouths of cats and dogs, they tend to puncture the bone, which then requires surgical treatment.

The most common cause is tooth elongation. Its a chronic and common condition, as their teeth are growing constantly unlike ours. Every month, their teeth can grow half an inch. Any tissue damage in the mouth can cause tooth root abscesses in rabbits.

Treatment:

Some may require long term pain therapy and management. Yet you will need to take a trip to your local vets to find out the exact cause of what has happened. Sometimes, surgery may even be required, yet this is to remove the affected teeth.

I hope this post helped you to have a better understanding of tooth root abscesses in rabbits.
The inflammation could be due to a bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infection. They even could have inhale a foreign object, to their body, into the lungs.

Some environmental factors including smoke/chemicals, unable to swallow, coma or a dental disease could be what leads to the pneumonia in rabbits.

Types and Symptoms:

Here is a list of some common symptoms found in the four main types of it:

Weight loss

Anorexia

Fever

Lethargy

Sneezing

Intolerance to exercise

Excessive salivation

Nose discharge

Eye discharge

Difficulty breathing

Facial abscesses

The four main types are:

Bacterial

Fungal

Parasitic

Viral

Treatment:

If you think your bunny has this horrible disease, make sure to go straight to the vets as they can tell you exactly what it is and what you can do. They will most likely be prescribed something which will help them, and therapy may be needed to clean their airway if it is blocked up.
I have heard it is fine for their weight to change very slightly, yet if they loose 10% or more of their normal body weight, you know you need to do something. As this is happening, if it is accompanied with muscle atrophy (also known as the wasting away of muscle mass),then you know something is VERY wrong. At this point they will need to immediately seek medical attention and another name it may be referred to as is cachexia.

Types and Symptoms:

Depending on what has caused it, they will have different symptoms. Some of the general signs to look out for are:

Thinness

Reduced size and appearance

Some other symptoms which are also quite common are:

Producing less stools

Teeth grinding

A haunched posture

Bad breath

Drooling

Unable to eat

Aren't interested in their food

Abnormal boating in their intestinal area around the stomach

Abnormal breathing sounds

Irregular heart rhythms

Causes:

There can be many different causes for muscle and weight-loss in rabbits. This can include increased metabolism. Their body may start using lean muscle for energy to carry out their daily functions. Some metabolic disorders such as organ failure associated with cancer can also cause this to happen. Here is a list of some other common causes:

Dental diseases

Dietary causes

Gastrointestinal disorders

Central nervous system disorders (can contribute to anorexia or other similar disorders)

Neuromuscular diseases and pain

Spinal problems

Treatment:

This is dependant upon what has caused it. So the treatment can't be certain due to the many different causes it has. They may be able to stabilize the animal by using pain relief. I would definitely recommend you visiting the vet for them to be diagnosed and treated properly.

After all of this, make sure to keep your bunny on a well-balanced diet involving lots of fresh greens for them to eat.

I hope this post helps you to have a better understanding.
By this I mean something to get rid of them. Here is a post all about fleas in rabbits and what you can do:

You may wander when these imbeciles are going to have an impact on your bunny, and currently this is all year round. How lovely...

What you will need to do is make sure you have something which you can use on your pet which will kill the fleas and not them. Well, what I would do is talk to the vets, or the pet shop workers about what is best for my bun to treat them without making them loose their fur.

No matter what, still be cautious about what your using on them as I have heard they are still looking for the most effective way to prevent these. So the cure is still out there!

The methods of prevention include:

Flea powders
Flea dips (baths)
Flea combs
Flea collars

Flea Powders:

From what I have heard, it sounds like a fairly effective way as long as your bunny doesn't constantly lick themselves after this. These are safe-ish, just don't assume they are completely 100% safe.

Flea Dips:

Personally, I WOULDN'T recommend the flea dips as they could cause your bunny to go into shock with the water getting down to their skin, and also they can be hard to completely dry them which could be bad if you miss a spot on them.

Flea Combs:

This method won't completely kill all of them, yet will get some of them which will help. I have heard this is something which you must do. When doing this you will need to check their ears and behind their legs.

Flea Collars:

I have heard this isn't a suitable method for bunnies as they are made for larger animals and can easily give your bunny an overdose which you don't want to do. Also having this around their neck isn't nice for them as they just generally don't like it.

There are other methods but I find it is suitable to talk to a vet about what to do with your flea issue. I hope this post helps, and for any further information, I would recommend you to talk to your local vet.
I have rabbits, dogs, and cats yet the rabbits are in an outdoor hutch. Some people may be interested in if they can have a house rabbit and a dog living together in a calm environment.

The truth is you can. It's best if you introduce them at a younger age as then they will be not as scared as they will be more accepting and if they are brought up around each other they will be fine.

Like all animals, to have rabbits and dogs living happily together, you will have to bond them. Generally its best to have the rabbit first, then introduce a puppy to the rabbit, as most dog's instincts once they are older is to kill or hunt them. Although you can get them to be friends when they are older, its just more of a challenge.

The best place to introduce them to each other is in what is called a 'neutral' area. All this has to be is a place where both of them have never been before. You do this so neither of them can be the dominant one and be in charge (which normally leads to aggression and a fight which isn't nice).

You want to start with both of them on leads and possible introduce food which they can each snack on, which normally relax's the situation making it more comfortable for both of them. Mainly, you are trying to make your bunny trust the dog not to eat him, as dog's are generally not shy and are quite confident.

Another way is to have your bunny in their cage or run and your dog on the outside on a lead. Sometimes they feel more secure in a cage and will come up and sniff them. This would mean the rabbit will be in their familiar surroundings which can work out to be fine.

I have heard what you want to dog to do is associate the small fragile bunny with the word 'gentle' and you want to use words along this line when they meet each other, and when the he is being gentle, you want to praise him for this. The use of positive reinforcement is very effective so you need to try to do this.

If the dog becomes wound up, pull him away and let him calm down before taking him near again. Make sure you have taught your dogs some of the basic obedience words as this is good for keeping him under control.

I have heard of another method which is having you dog lying down, and having the rabbit freely run around him.

Make sure to repeat this everyday as this will help to bond them. You should be able to see the changes in them overtime and eventually you may be able to have them nose to nose. By the end of this you may be able to have them in the same room as each other, but probably not what you may call 'best friends' which would be how two dogs, or two bunnies would be.

I hope you found this post useful on rabbits and dogs.
From my own experience and reading about it, in this post, I am going to tell you about the different activities which they do with each other and can do with you.

As you bond more with your bunny, spending lots of time with them, they will become much more friend;y and more fun to be around. Even bunnies which are generally aggressive have those activities they enjoy doing.

Hide n' Seek:

If you keep them as a house bunny, I have heard that they will run off and wait for you to go and find them and once you find them, sometimes they run off again. They could play this game for ages as it makes them happy. Even sometimes when you walk into the kitchen or go to the bathroom, they may be following you to 'find' you and then run off for you to follow.

Even in the garden, they may hop under a bush or behind a tree and when you make eye contact they may come out and hop towards you. When bunnies do activities like this, I find it gives them a character and personality making you have a stronger bond with them.

Follow the Leader:

Sometimes they do this when you have more then one bunny, yet they may follow you around instead. When they are either in their run, or in your house roaming around, they may have the 'leader' of their group going around, with the other ones copying them exactly by going through toys, hoping onto furniture or hopping around madly. This is another reason why its better to own more than one bunny as then they can communicate with each other having a companion which they do everything with.

Sometimes the games rabbits play are completely different, it may be their own game, or one of the more common ones which I may have mentioned above. Don't be worried if your bunny doesn't do any of this, this is just something which some enjoy doing more than others.

I hope you enjoyed this post!
By learning how to litter train your rabbit, you will be able to prevent this from happening, meaning a much nicer, cleaner environment for your bunny! Have a look at the information below if you are interested!

The first thing which you should do is check that your bunny is able to easily enter and exit the box without any stress, the best shape for one of these is a small dog one. The one i mean is an open one which has a part lower down for easier access. Here is a picture and a link for it:

There are many variations and this is only one example. A hooded one is much better as they keep the smell of it out of your house, but as you should be scooping it out everyday, it shouldn't be too bad anyways.

If you know they are capable of entering and exiting it, then you need something to encourage them to go in there. Sometimes what makes them go in there is by adding a bit of hay. This helps to keep their teeth at a reasonable length as well. Even if you put one of their toys in there, that is fine too.

If your bunny has chosen a corner which is where they always seem to 'go' then put their litter box there.

Sometimes, if they pee where they aren't meant to and are going regularly in their litter-box already, then you need to clean it up really well so no scent of it is left behind, and you need to put down a few drops of vinegar (only a few!) and as they don't like the smell, they will avoid it completely not even going near this area.

Another method which you could try, is to scoop up some of their waste and to place it in their litter box and anytime they do anything other than where they are meant to, you place it into the litter box showing good behaviour.

You could also reward them with a treat after they go in the correct place as positive reinforcement is very effective on bunnies I have noticed.

I hope this post helps you to learn how to litter train your rabbit!
The answer is a rabbit hutch!

If you are keeping your bunny outdoors like me, you will need to make sure they have the correct amount of space so when they are in their hutch at night, they can freely move around and play when they feel like it.

You have to make sure you make it at least at the minimal the standard size as then you know they will be fine. Also, you can't keep them in their hutch all day, you have to have a run which also has a recommended size which I will talk about below.

Hutch Size:

When owning a bunny, you have to make sure they have enough space to move. From what I have heard, your hutch needs to be a minimum of 6 feet long (180cm) which is quite large. Also you have to have it at least 2 feet (60cm) in depth. Concluding, to make sure your bunny is able to stand up on its back feet without hitting his head, it needs to be 2-3 feet (60-90cm) depending on your bunnies height. All you need to remember for this is the larger it is, the better.

Having a hutch this size will allow your bunny to have large toys in his hutch which he can play with, and it will mean he can run around madly. I found when I bought my bunny a larger hutch he was a lot neater for where he would discrete, making his hutch much easier to clean out daily.

Run Size:

Your rabbit should be spending lots of time in their run, seeing as the new recommended time to keep them in there daily, is 4 hours. I have heard they should be in a run of at the smallest size, 6 feet (180cm) by 4 feet (120cm). If you want, you could make it larger than this, which would benefit your bunny more, especially if they like going on mad run-arounds.

I find that its nicer for them to have you there when they are out in their run as you will bond with them and keep them company. As they feel more comfortable around you, they will come up to you and jump over you and onto your lap if your sitting on the grass.

Caution: Make sure not to have their hutch or run with mesh on the ground with them walking on it as this will wreck their feet giving them bumble foot which is very painful for them.
There is something similar to this called pseudo-anorexia which is when the rabbits still have an appetite but are unable to chew or swallow their food. Dental disease is the common cause of it. They both lead to drastic weight loss.

Symptoms:

They refuse to eat

Their fecal pellets are small in size and amount

They have lost a lot of weight

They have pain when they swallow

They have pain when they are eating

They have chronic bad breath

Causes:

Here is a list of some common causes (just remember that it won't be all of these, most likely just one):

They have stomach ulcers

They have dental diseases

A metabolic disorder (such as kidney failure)

They have cardiac failure

They have an infectious disease

They have a respiratory disease

They have a neurological disease

Tumor growth

They've had poisoning

There has been environmental or dietary changes

Pseudo-anorexia can be caused by any disease which affects their swallowing ability such as gingivitis.

Treatment:

They will need to be taken to the vet to figure out what caused it to know how to treat it, the sooner it is sorted, the sooner they will be eating again. Sometimes you have to change what they are eating to make them eat again, and you want to make sure they are getting lots of water to drink.

The vet may prescribe a medication, and therefore you will need to make sure that they are having it.

Prevention:

I have heard that it is hard to know how to treat this as of the many different causes for it. Although you will want to keep them out of stress situations and a clean hutch with a nice healthy diet. With their diet you will want to give them some fruit and vegetables which they like (but not too much) and make sure not to give them the same all the time as they will become bored of what they are eating and possibly not eat.
They produce much less urine and don't go as much as they become dehydrated.

Types:

There is two types, acute and chronic.

Acute - This is when it can happen suddenly as of the accumulation of toxins in the kidney's, or it could be as a result of an electrolyte imbalance.

Chronic - This is when it progresses slowly, it can take over several months.

Symptoms:

Here is a list of the symptoms which your bunny may have:

Depression

Unable to eat

They have a fever

Diarrhoea

Seizures

Lack or inability to produce stools

Heart complications

Painful or tender kidneys

Causes:

The causes of this can vary, acute can happen from shock, trauma, stroke, extreme stress, heart failure or blood infection.

A urinary tract obstruction or infection which has spread to their pelvis, can cause either form of kidney failure in rabbits. Some other common causes are ageing and diabetes.

Treatment:

If they have the acute type, then they may need to have immediate fluid balance therapy which should prevent any more injury from happening. The vet will tell you what you need to do and if you need to feed them anything in particular. They may also provide a medication.

After this you will need to make sure they have lots of rest and and a good balanced diet. Make sure that they are having plenty of fluids and I have heard green vegetables are good fr helping them as well. But before you do anything, check with you vet.

This usually happens when your bunnies skin has broke or teared or if the skin is exposed to moist conditions. This alters the flora found within. Normally, its healthy bacteria which lives in their skin, but this can easily be altered to harmful bacteria which will overgrow.

Symptoms:

The symptoms can depend on the type of bacteria infection in which they have, but here are some common symptoms:

Obesity (weight gain)

Muscle pain.

Diarrhoea.

Nasal and eye discharge.

Urinary tract infections.

Redness and crusting around the infected area.

Their fur becomes matted.

sanitation and personal hygiene is poor.

A dental disease - they will have bleeding gums, be slobbering, as well as loose and decaying teeth.

Cause:

This mainly occurs when the skin has been broken, mainly happens when their is poor environmental conditions, which could be moisture. It could happen if they have an injury, or poor blood circulation. Its a very common occurrence so if your bunny has it, don't freak out.

This is worse in unhealthy or obese bunnies, and can become trapped in matted fur.

Treatment:

Most will need to have a bath (I would recommend letting a vet do this) and will need to be dried very well, especially the affected area's. If the infection is really bad, you will need to have the area around it shaved, and you may also be prescribed some anti-biotics or something to apply to these areas.

Prevention:

You need to keep feeding your bunny a balanced diet. By you preventing obesity, you are preventing some further infections from occurring within their skin folds. You need to keep their fur well groomed and not matted. This can prevent bacteria from being close to their body.
